Away team wins through

Closely contested game but Whitchurch lose out to Cup rules
A great game of rugby contested by two equally committed teams. The game kicked off in a very evenly contested game with Hereford taking an early lead before the Whitchurch boys even woke up. The visitors had a very well organised pack who controlled their ball from the set piece and put Whitchurch on the back foot from the start.
At 12 nil down after 20 minutes Whitchurch would have to dig deep to get back into the game. It was great to see them do this with better rucking, quick ball and good running lines. A strong spell in the second half saw Whitchurch score two well worked tries and really showed how they can compete with any side when they have the ball in hand and a determination to win. Hereford had no real answer to the strong running and good support play and all efforts were rewarded with Whitchurch entering the final quarter of the game 19 to 12 up.
I'm not sure if it was complacency or tiredness but unfortunately the boys took the foot off the pedal and allowed Hereford forwards to once again control the ball and work their way up the pitch to score. At 19 all and three minutes to play it was always going to be a thrilling finish.
In the final moments a clever kick and chase through from Isaac saw him dive for the ball but he was deemed to be just over the dead ball line - denying a win. The home team were all awarded a penalty in front of the posts but with Eddie, our star kicker, out of action unfortunately we were unable to convert to win. The match ended 19 all so Hereford go through to the next round of the cup as they were the away team.
Never mind - great game. Lessons to learn - keep applying the pressure, compete for the ball and play for the full 70 mins. Great performance from both teams and played in the right spirit and good singing from the boys despite the loss.
