Slow start, strong finish
Areas to work on but solid win
We travelled to Telford for our third encounter this season, having played them at home and again in the cup. With victories in earlier games, perhaps the boys were a bit complacent but Telford came out of the blocks determined to achieve a win against Whitchurch.
For the first 10-15 minutes the Whitchurch boys were on the back foot and at the receiving end of some strong work by the Telford forwards. However after Telford were shown a yellow card for a high tackle, Whitchurch seemed to wake up and compete better at the rucks and provide some good ball for our backs to run.
With ball in hand the Whitchurch team grew in confidence, running in a number of tries in quick succession - with particularly string running from Rees and James. Isaac and Jake worked well in the centre and Henry controlled the backline well at stand off with a good service from Tom who also had the fun of marshalling the forwards. Charlie at Full Back had another great game and at times providing the last line of defence that was needed.
The forwards eventually got their act together with more commitment at the rucks and organisation in defence. It was great to also see how we were able to rotate players without too much of an impact on the games performance. The second half with Jimmy and Ryan on added some more size to the team and it was pleasing to see the big man get over for a close range try.
All in all a good performance although there's work to do on starting more positively and also discipline as again our penalty count was too high and could cost us in closer games. Well done though as Telford were tougher than the score suggested.
